2027 Election: Why PDP Governors May Join APC
There are growing speculations that several governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 general elections approach.
Sources indicate that these potential defections are not primarily driven by the unresolved crises within the PDP, particularly between the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and certain state and zonal chapters. Rather, some governors are reportedly engaging in discussions with APC leaders, with several having already visited President Bola Tinubu in Lagos. Others have invited the president to their states to inaugurate projects, signaling ongoing talks.
A key figure in these negotiations is Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma. He is believed to be playing a pivotal role in encouraging PDP governors to join the APC as part of efforts to broaden the party’s influence.
Notably, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently encouraged his constituents to support President Tinubu’s administration. Speaking at the 5th Delta State Communication Workshop in Asaba, Oborevwori expressed his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve the lives of Nigerians, including those in Delta.
President Tinubu has also praised several governors for their leadership. During a visit to Enugu, he lauded Governor Peter Mbah for his developmental strides and innovative use of technology to support private sector growth in the state. Mbah’s leadership was described as focused and result-oriented, earning him the president’s commendation.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State was among the first to visit Tinubu in Lagos, reinforcing the growing ties between APC leaders and state governors.
Meanwhile, in Delta State, a group of concerned PDP leaders has urged Governor Oborevwori to address rumors that he is planning to defect to the APC. In an open letter, they expressed their anxiety over the alleged plan, which they believe is linked to the governor’s re-election bid in 2027. The letter demands a public clarification on the matter, warning that any delay in response could be seen as tacit confirmation of the rumors.
The letter, signed by Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, emphasized the need for Oborevwori to clarify his intentions for the sake of transparency and to reassure PDP members in the state about their future in the party.
