41 Years Old Woman Apprehended for Human Trafficking in South Africa
A 41-year-old Nigerian woman, Success Egabor, has been arrested in South Africa on allegations of being part of a human trafficking ring.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, reported that Egabor was initially detained by the Department of Home Affairs last Thursday for residing illegally in the country. She was subsequently handed over to the Hawks due to additional human trafficking allegations.
“On May 23, 2024, a Department of Home Affairs official in Strand reported the arrest of a foreign national who was in the country illegally,” Vukubi stated. “Upon receiving this information, the Hawks identified the detainee as a suspect they had been seeking.”
Egabor appeared in George Magistrates’ Court on Friday, and her case was postponed to June 10. She will join her co-accused, Nontobeko Mathunjwa, 35, and Precious Abudu, 34, who were previously denied bail by the same court.
The Hawks made another arrest on Saturday following surveillance of a known brothel in George in response to an assault complaint attended by the SAPS. The investigation revealed that the victim was being held against her will by the suspect.
“The Hawks promptly arrested the suspect, and the investigation is ongoing. The victim was taken to George Hospital for medical examination and subsequently moved to a place of safety,” Vukubi added.
