The official number of Israelis killed in today’s Hamas attack has risen from 40 to 70, the country’s emergency services has said.

Earlier, we told you local reports had stated at least 100 people had been killed, but this latest official figure confirms the number of dead is lower.

“The wounded are actively being evacuated in ambulances, mobile intensive care vehicles, and MDA-Hatzola Air helicopters to various hospitals,” it added in a statement.

The latest figure we have on the wounded states 545 have been injured, although reports suggests this figure could be as high as 740.

Retaliation

198 Palestinians have died following retaliatory Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip – health officials there have said.

Officials added at least 1,610 people had been injured in the strikes.

Israel launched what it called “Operation Sword of Iron” in response to Hamas’s incursion, which began with massive rocket strikes early this morning.
