76-Year-Old Man Charge to Court For Posting Girlfriends’ Photos On Social Media

A 76-year-old man, Bala Mohammed, was brought before Chief Magistrate Court 5 in Bauchi on Thursday, charged with defamation after allegedly posting photos of women on Facebook. According to News360 Nigeria, Mohammed, who resides in Tambari Housing Estate, faces accusations of damaging the reputations of several women by posting their images and falsely claiming they were his romantic partners.

The charges, filed by Prosecutor ASP Zakari Mohammed, relate to an incident in October 2024. The defendant allegedly shared pictures of multiple women on social media, claiming they were his girlfriends with whom he had intimate relations. However, one of the women, whose identity has been kept confidential, denied the allegations, explaining that she had only taken a selfie with the defendant and had no romantic involvement with him.

The prosecution cited violations of various sections of the Bauchi State Penal Code 2022, including sections 183, 196, 388, and 389. Magistrate Mrs. Laraba Hamisu ordered that Mohammed be remanded in custody at the Bauchi Correctional Centre and scheduled the next hearing for November 27, 2024, to allow for further investigation.
