The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Benue State University branch (ASUU-BSU), has declared an indefinite strike on 1st of February,2024, which is going to three weeks now, In a joint statement issued by the Branch chairman, Comrade Kwaghfan Tarnongo, and Secretary, Terrumun Gajir, to address the longstanding issues related to better conditions of service. The move follows the failure of the Benue State University (BSU) Administration to meet the demands of the union despite previous agreements.
This was published in ASUU Strike Bulletin made by Strike Monitoring Committee in the afternoon of Thursday, 15th of February, 2024.
The published statement reads below
Dear Comrades, As we enter the third week of our strike
1. Reports available indicate that, the strike is solid across all the Faculties.
2. The gains of the strike have been felt by the payment of two months EAA to some members. This is a good start but falls short of our demands
3. Remember that the issues in contention are:
•implementation and payment of accrued arrears of the backlog of promotions
•payment of salary arrears due to all members
•shortfall in salaries of staff of the College of Health Sciences
•payment of Earned Academic Allowances, EAA.
•Payment of sundry allowances for self-sustaining programmes such as GST, PG, SIWES and SANDWICH)
•non-implementation of health insurance scheme
4. The meeting with the University Management and the State Government DID NOT produce any concrete and conclusive decision.
5. The just concluded NEC of our Union restated their support for our just struggle and urged us to remain resolute until the goals of the strike are achieved.
6. Do not do anything that will undermine the ongoing strike.
7. Members are advised to visit the Union Secretariat for updates and attend congresses whenever called upon to get correct information.
8. Members should reject all blackmail and propaganda and report intimidations to the Chairman for appropriate responses.
9. Remain steadfast. Our strength is in our unity.
