NANS Criticizes EFCC for Mistreatment of FUTA Students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the actions of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during raids on student lounges at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). NANS asserts that EFCC operatives violated the rights of the students involved.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NANS Senate President Comrade Akinteye Afeez highlighted the June 7 raid, during which 127 male and female students were arrested. He criticized the EFCC for its lack of due process and justice during the operation.

While acknowledging the importance of combating cybercrime and upholding the rule of law, NANS expressed concern over the lawlessness and injustice displayed during the raid. Despite ongoing discussions with the EFCC Command, NANS noted a persistent pattern of abuse against their members.

NANS emphasized that the EFCC should act with precision, targeting only individuals with concrete evidence against them, rather than innocent citizens. The association reminded the EFCC of its duty to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes with professionalism and respect for human rights.

NANS called for immediate sanctions against the officers involved in the mistreatment of students, particularly the abuse of female students during the raid. They also demanded a thorough review and reform of the EFCC’s operational procedures to prevent future abuses.

Moreover, NANS urged the EFCC to invest in continuous training for their officers to enhance investigative skills and ensure operations align with international human rights standards. Building public trust, according to NANS, requires the EFCC to demonstrate a commitment to justice and human rights rather than instilling fear and perpetuating abuse.

“We stand firmly against any form of human rights abuse and will continue to advocate for the protection and dignity of every Nigerian citizen,” NANS stated.
