Focus on Alleviating Suffering, Not Buying Presidential Jets, Peter Obi Criticizes FG

By Adebayo Folorunsho-Francis

Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized the Federal Government’s plans to add new aircraft to the Presidential fleet on Monday.

Three days ago, the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence recommended that the FG purchase new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima. This recommendation was part of a report investigating the current status of the Presidential air fleet, following plans to sell three existing planes.

Obi denounced this move as insensitive to the suffering of Nigerians. In a statement on his X handle, the former Anambra governor expressed his dismay that the government would consider buying new jets amidst an economic crisis characterized by hyperinflation, a depreciating currency, and widespread poverty.

“This demonstrates extreme insensitivity to citizens’ struggles,” Obi stated. “With rising insecurity, poverty, hunger, and homelessness, this decision highlights a clear disconnect between the government and the people. It is unacceptable as the situation in the country today demands a more compassionate use of resources, prioritizing citizens’ welfare.”

He pointed out that the existing Presidential jets, averaging 12 years old, were purchased when Nigerians were in a better economic position. Given the current high debt profile and economic challenges, Obi argued that the government should focus on alleviating citizens’ suffering rather than expanding luxuries.

“Instead of adding to our luxuries, we should be focused on finding solutions to their problems,” he emphasized. Obi also contrasted this with the US, noting that the Vice President’s 100-year-old residence has only been extensively renovated twice, with new Vice Presidents funding minor refurbishments personally.

“It is time to stop this impunity, insensitivity, and shamelessness,” Obi urged. “We must prioritize education, healthcare, and lifting our citizens out of poverty. Let us work together to build a nation that truly serves its people, not just the interests of a few.”
