The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has criticized the National Universities Commission (NUC) for failing to enforce admission quotas in universities across Nigeria. NANS accused the NUC of neglecting its duty to regulate and monitor these quotas, resulting in universities admitting more students than they can effectively teach and prepare for professional licensure.
NANS expressed particular concern for medical students, including those in Medical Laboratory Science programs, who have been unable to sit for their professional exams despite completing their programs years ago. This delay, which NANS attributes to NUC’s negligence, has severely impacted their career prospects and job opportunities, leaving them unable to practice in their fields despite years of investment in education.
Babatunde Akinteye, President of the Senate at NANS, stressed the urgent need for the NUC to enforce strict adherence to admission quotas set by professional bodies. He urged universities to prioritize students’ welfare and professional futures by complying with these quotas.
“The plight of MLS students nationwide highlights the consequences of ignoring professional admission quotas. These students have faced unfair treatment and jeopardized futures due to institutions that should have guided them towards successful careers,” Akinteye stated.
NANS called on the NUC to implement rigorous monitoring and regulatory measures to protect the interests of all students. Akinteye expressed hope that such interventions would restore integrity to professional education in Nigeria, preventing future students from facing similar hardships.
