Obasanjo Visits South-East Governors, Advocates for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited the South-East Governors on Tuesday in a show of solidarity, during which the governors decided to approach President Bola Tinubu to advocate for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Following an extensive meeting that lasted over seven hours, the South-East Governors announced the formation of a burial committee for the late Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu. This committee will be led by former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim.
Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, expressed condolences on behalf of the forum: “We extend our sympathies to the families of Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and the entire South-East region, as well as to the family of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.”
He further detailed the purpose of Obasanjo’s visit, accompanied by Chief Emeka Anyaoku and His Royal Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe: “The Forum received a delegation led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo for a solidarity visit.”
The governors discussed the outcomes of the South-East security and economic summit held in Owerri, Imo State, on September 28, 2023. They agreed to implement key aspects of the summit’s report, focusing on security and economic integration in the region.
The forum resolved to meet with President Tinubu to discuss pressing issues concerning the South-East and to advocate for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
The burial committee for Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu will include former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, who will serve as the Secretary, along with other prominent Igbo leaders from the Igbo-speaking states.
