In a significant political move, Comrade Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday.
This reunion took place during the inauguration of the APC Edo 2024 Governorship National Campaign Council, led by Cross River Governor Senator Bassey Otu, in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
An emotional scene unfolded as Shaibu approached former Governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and knelt before him, receiving applause from party supporters. Shaibu has consistently referred to Oshiomhole as his “father” and shared pictures of their reunion on his official social media accounts with the caption, “Father and Son!”
The relationship between Shaibu and Oshiomhole had previously soured during the conflict between Oshiomhole and current Governor Godwin Obaseki in the lead-up to the 2020 Edo gubernatorial election. During this period, Shaibu sided with Obaseki, accusing Oshiomhole of trying to play the role of a godfather, which they had both opposed in the past.
Shaibu’s return to the APC was notable as he was accompanied by prominent members of the Dan Orbih-led Legacy Group from the PDP.
