Hunger Protest: Police Speaks on how they will treat protesters

Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, has addressed the planned “Hunger Protest” set for August 1, stating that the Nigeria Police Force will handle the situation professionally.
During a meeting in Abuja with senior police officers, including Commissioners of Police and higher ranks, Egbetokun emphasized the importance of analyzing intelligence from various Police Commands to ensure national security.
“We are prepared and I want to assure you that we will manage the protest in the most professional manner,” he said.
Egbetokun affirmed the police’s commitment to safeguarding peaceful protesters. “If the protest is peaceful, you will see us protecting the protesters as long as they remain peaceful. However, we have a duty to protect lives and property and will not allow hoodlums to cause destruction under the guise of protest.”
He reiterated that while peaceful protest is a right, violent protest is criminal and will not be tolerated. “No civilized society will tolerate violent protest. Violent protest is criminal, but peaceful protest is a right.”
The I-G urged the youth to disregard calls for violent protests, warning against attempts to replicate incidents similar to those in Kenya. He reminded the public of the destructive outcomes of the “EndSARS” protests, which resulted in loss of lives, destruction of public infrastructure, looting of private businesses, and job losses.
Egbetokun’s remarks reflect the police’s dual commitment to facilitating peaceful demonstrations while maintaining law and order.
