Opinion: Four Reasons to Reconsider Joining the Nationwide Protest

As the nationwide protest set for August 1st, 2024, approaches, I urge Nigerian youth to carefully consider their participation. While there are valid grievances fueling this protest, I believe it is not in the best interest of the country at this moment. Here are four compelling reasons to think twice before joining:

#### 1. Lack of Identified Leadership

The organizers of this protest remain anonymous. For a protest to be effective and safe, it should have visible leaders who can guide and manage the crowd. Without clear leadership, the protest risks becoming chaotic, with no one to take responsibility or steer it in a constructive direction.

#### 2. Risk of Hijacking by Thugs

In a country grappling with bandits, criminals, and hoodlums, the likelihood of a peaceful protest being hijacked is high. History has shown that such elements can infiltrate protests, turning peaceful demonstrations into violent confrontations, endangering lives and property.

#### 3. Premature Judgment of Tinubu’s Government

Judging President Bola Tinubu’s administration at this early stage is premature. Despite some harsh policies, Tinubu’s government needs time to address the complex issues and policy missteps of previous administrations. A heavy protest at this juncture could undermine ongoing efforts to stabilize the nation.

#### 4. Lessons from the EndSARS Protest

The EndSARS protest serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of large-scale demonstrations. Many lives were lost, and property worth billions of Naira was destroyed. We must consider whether we are prepared to face similar outcomes. The risk of escalating violence and further loss of life and property is too great to ignore.

In conclusion, while the reasons for the protest are legitimate, the potential risks and current national context suggest that now may not be the right time for such action. Thoughtful consideration and strategic planning are essential to ensure that protests do not lead to unintended and harmful consequences.
