Full Speech by IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun on the EndBadGovernance Protest

Introduction:

Distinguished Nigerians,

It is with a profound sense of responsibility that I address you today. In light of the recent nationwide protests initiated on August 1, 2024, I want to share the current state of affairs and the actions taken by the Nigeria Police Force.

Background and Precautions:

Prior to the protest, we received credible intelligence suggesting that some groups were mobilizing youths for violent demonstrations aimed at creating disorder. Despite numerous warnings and advisories against violence, some factions insisted on proceeding with the protest. Our initial recommendation was to either suspend the protests or confine them to controlled areas to ensure safety and security.

Police Efforts and Professional Conduct:

In respecting the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and express their views, we took all necessary measures to facilitate peaceful protests. Our officers were deployed nationwide with clear instructions to avoid unnecessary harassment and to uphold court orders. However, our efforts were undermined as some protesters engaged in activities beyond peaceful demonstration.

Unprecedented Violence and Destruction:

Regrettably, today’s events in major cities reveal that the protests have devolved into violent uprisings. Instances of mass looting and destruction have been reported across Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, FCT Abuja, Niger, and Jigawa. Critical infrastructure, including police stations and government facilities, has been targeted, resulting in substantial damage and chaos.

Specific Incidents:

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), despite adherence to a court order designating the National Stadium as the protest site, many protesters moved to the streets. We provided security throughout, respecting their rights despite breaches of the court order. However, in several locations, security personnel were attacked, resulting in the death of one officer and severe injuries to others.

Moreover, our Early Detection and Disposal (EOD) team in Lagos successfully neutralized a suspected IED, preventing potential disaster. In Borno State, an explosion among protesters tragically killed four individuals and injured 34 others.

Call for Cooperation and Security Measures:

We urge law-abiding citizens to heed warnings issued by security agencies based on actionable intelligence. The Nigeria Police Force is on high alert, fully mobilized to respond decisively to threats against public safety. We remain dedicated to maintaining order and protecting lives and property.

Conclusion:

Groups exploiting the right to protest to destabilize the country must remember their constitutional duty to respect laws and others’ rights. The Police, with support from other security agencies if necessary, will address these threats robustly.

We appeal to all citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities during this turbulent period. Your safety is our priority, and we are committed to restoring peace and stability.

Thank you.
