Clarification on Nigerian Senators’ Salaries and Allowances

PRESS STATEMENT

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) seeks to address ongoing debates regarding the compensation of Members of the National Assembly. This issue has been a focal point of discussion among elder statesmen, media, and civil society.

Recent comments by former Senator Shehu Sani, claiming that each Senator receives a monthly operational cost of N13.5 million in addition to a N750,000 monthly salary, have prompted this clarification.

RMAFC does not possess the authority to enforce compliance with the remuneration package; however, this matter is currently being addressed by the National Assembly.

A detailed breakdown of Senators’ monthly entitlements shows a total of N1,063,860.00, including: Basic Salary – N168,866.70; Motor Vehicle Fuelling and Maintenance Allowance – N126,650.00; Personal Assistant – N42,216.66; Domestic Staff – N126,650.00; Entertainment – N50,660.00; Utilities – N50,660.00; Newspapers/Periodicals – N25,330.00; Wardrobe – N42,216.66; House Maintenance – N8,443.33; and Constituency Allowance – N422,166.66.

It is important to differentiate between regular and non-regular allowances. Regular allowances are paid monthly alongside the basic salary, while non-regular allowances, such as Furniture Allowance (N6,079,200.00) and Severance Gratuity (N6,079,200.00), are disbursed once per tenure. Vehicle Allowance (N8,105,600.00) is an optional loan to be repaid before leaving office.

Additionally, except for high-ranking officials like the President, Vice President, Senate President, and Speaker of the House, housing is no longer provided to public and legislative officers as it was previously.

Any claims regarding additional allowances not outlined in the Remuneration (Amendment) Act, 2008 should be substantiated by the accuser. To prevent misinformation, the public and interested parties are encouraged to review the official details of the current remuneration package for political, public, and judicial office holders on our website: rmafc.gov.ng.
