How Lawyer Sunday Onunu Allegedly Kills Orphan in Ebonyi

Sunday Onunu, a lawyer, is reported to have fatally shot an orphan named Nnamdi Nwite Ugo in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, over the weekend. The incident occurred during a celebration for the election of new leaders within the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney group, which oversees land transactions in the region.

The group had recently organized an election to select new leaders responsible for managing local land issues. Onunu, who serves as the group’s legal counsel, is said to have fired celebratory gunshots after one of his allies was elected. Tragically, a stray bullet struck Ugo, who was not involved in the celebration, resulting in his death.
Sources indicate that Ugo, an orphan with no immediate family, was left without close relatives to advocate for him. It is reported that negotiations are underway between Onunu’s family and Ugo’s distant relatives, with claims that a monetary offer has been made for Ugo’s burial and to address the incident.
A video circulating on social media shows Onunu, dressed in a yellow T-shirt, firing into the air during the celebration. The footage has sparked widespread attention and outrage.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, confirmed Onunu’s arrest but mentioned that he was not yet fully briefed on the details of the case. “I’m aware of the incident and that Onunu is in our custody, but I don’t have full information on the specifics of the situation at this time,” Ukandu said.
