Reasons Ogun State Revokes Licenses of 20 Private Orphanages

Ogun State Governor, Abiodun declares cultism act of terrorism

The Ogun State Government has rescinded the provisional licenses of 20 private orphanages operating in the state. This decision was announced by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, during a meeting with orphanage representatives at the ministry’s conference room in Abeokuta.

Ms. Adeleye explained that the revocation was due to non-compliance with regulations designed to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in their care. “While not all of the affected orphanages engaged in misconduct, such as failing to adhere to child adoption guidelines, we have decided to withdraw their provisional licenses. This will allow us to conduct a thorough review and ensure compliance with all regulations,” she stated.

The commissioner noted that the orphanages have been instructed to reapply for their licenses after a month. In the meantime, those with permanent licenses have been given additional guidelines to maintain high standards.

The government’s action aims to protect vulnerable children and uphold the integrity of orphanage operations. Ms. Adeleye emphasized that any illegal practices, such as unauthorized adoptions or child trafficking, would not be tolerated. She stressed that orphanages should operate with empathy and a commitment to the welfare of the children.

The commissioner also highlighted the administration’s dedication to safeguarding children’s rights and preventing exploitation. She urged orphanage operators to comply with established guidelines and warned that violations would lead to legal action. Additionally, the ministry is enhancing its data collection efforts to ensure proper documentation of all children placed in orphanages.
