Why Dangote’s Petrol Appears Clearer: An Insight into Its Composition

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, has clarified why the initial batch of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from his refinery is notably clearer compared to the petrol currently available in the market.

During a broadcast from his refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, Dangote explained that the clarity of the petrol is indicative of its higher quality and environmental benefits. He stated that this refined petrol not only offers cleaner combustion but also helps in reducing health issues related to polluted fuel.

“This sample of petrol may look different in color, but it signifies a genuine and superior product,” Dangote said. He further explained that the clarity of the diesel, labeled as Euro-5, is due to its low sulfur content, which improves engine longevity and performance.

He noted that the clear appearance of the petrol is due to the inclusion of ethanol, which enhances engine efficiency and reduces carbon emissions. Ethanol, with its high oxygen content, minimizes carbon buildup in engines, thereby lowering air pollution.

However, the use of ethanol in petrol, resulting in a clear, water-like appearance, may have some drawbacks. Ethanol-blended petrol, known as E10, is compatible with vehicles manufactured after 2010 but may not be suitable for older models, including some from major brands like Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Audi, and Mercedes.

E10 fuel can impact vehicle performance in several ways:

Reduced Mileage: Ethanol has a lower energy density compared to petrol, which can result in decreased fuel efficiency.

Water Absorption: Ethanol attracts moisture from the air, which can lead to water contamination in the fuel tank, causing operational issues.

Separation Issues: Ethanol and petrol may separate, leading to performance problems and potentially damaging vehicle components.

Potential Damage: The ethanol-water mixture can settle at the bottom of the tank, potentially causing damage to the fuel system and engine.

While ethanol-blended fuels contribute to environmental sustainability, they may pose challenges for vehicle performance and maintenance. It is crucial to consider these factors when choosing the right fuel for your vehicle.
