Bauchi Flooding: See the Numbers of People Dead, Injured as Over 120,000 Homes Affected
The Bauchi State Government has reported that the recent flooding has resulted in 24 deaths, 163 injuries, and the displacement of 122,330 residents across 16 local government areas.Â
The flood also disrupted infrastructure, cutting off 12 major roads and damaging 502,350 homes, 178 electricity poles, and causing the loss of 11,183 livestock.
Hajiya Hajara Wanka, the State Commissioner for Humanitarian and Disaster Management, provided these details during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting in Bauchi.
She noted that 16 of the state’s 20 local councils were affected, surpassing the Nigeria Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) forecast of 11 councils. Despite initial predictions that 31 states, including Bauchi, were at risk of flooding, the impact has been more severe than anticipated.
In response, Governor Bala Mohammed has established a committee to assess the damage across all affected areas and develop a plan for intervention. The committee has reported that it is 80% through its evaluation and response efforts.
