UN Reports Over 400,000 Displaced by Catastrophic Flooding in Maiduguri

The United Nations reports that over 414,000 individuals have been displaced due to severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno. This information was shared by Ann Weru, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Abuja.

Weru noted that the data, compiled by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as of September 11, also indicates that 37 people have lost their lives and around 58 have been injured.

The flooding has disrupted access to essential services, including hospitals, schools, and markets. There has been significant damage to infrastructure, such as bridges, and ongoing evacuations from high-risk areas are underway due to concerns about potential disease outbreaks.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, is expected to address the media about the situation and will visit the flood-affected regions to engage with local communities, authorities, and humanitarian partners. A news conference with government officials, humanitarian organizations, UN agency representatives, and donors will follow later in the day.
