Police Respond to Fubara: “We Will Prevent Violence in Rivers LG Election

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a response to allegations made by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara concerning the police’s role in the ongoing local government elections.

In a statement on Friday, the NPF emphasized that its operations were fully aligned with a Federal High Court order prohibiting police involvement in the electoral process. The statement, signed by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, clarified that the order had been communicated to both the police and the Rivers State Government.

The NPF noted that the Inspector-General had instructed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to maintain a hands-off approach to the elections. However, on the evening of October 3, 2024, the police received reports indicating that personnel from the Rivers State Government House were dispatched to assist the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) with the elections.

Upon learning of this, the IGP ordered the withdrawal of those officers and directed that they be replaced with personnel from the Command’s Operations Department. The replacement officers were tasked exclusively with providing overnight security at the RIEC facility to deter any potential threats.

The NPF acknowledged the series of security incidents in the state linked to conflicting court rulings and political tensions. Their decision to secure the RIEC office was characterized as a proactive measure based on intelligence, with a clear focus on protecting the facility.

The police expressed concern over Fubara’s late-night visit to the RIEC, where he allegedly confronted officers performing their duties. The NPF condemned what it termed “baseless accusations” made by the governor against the Inspector-General and the police force.

Additionally, the NPF criticized Fubara’s reported threats of violence, labeling such rhetoric as intolerable. “Threatening bloodshed and destruction over a local government election is unacceptable,” the statement asserted.

The NPF reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining peace and security in Rivers State and announced plans for an increased police presence throughout the area. Residents were encouraged to go about their lawful activities, as the police, in conjunction with other security agencies, are committed to preventing any disruptions to public order.
