Amaechi Opens Up About His Rift with Wike in Rivers Politics

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has shed light on his enduring political divide with Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. In an interview with Igbere TV, Amaechi, who appointed Wike as his Chief of Staff, revealed, “When I became governor, Wike was part of my team, but I prefer not to mention his name.”
Amaechi emphasized his influence on the political careers of many Rivers politicians, stating, “Name any politician from Rivers who hasn’t been shaped by my leadership.”
Reflecting on his early political journey, he contrasted the values of his generation with those of today’s leaders. Having entered politics at just 22, he described himself as part of the Rufus George camp—a faction he characterized as “poor and broke,” yet grounded in integrity. “Those of us who valued character stood with Rufus. My father taught me the importance of character,” he explained, noting how this principle guided his political decisions.
Amaechi also expressed admiration for Peter Odili, another key figure in Rivers politics, who, despite limited resources, earned respect for his integrity. “The politicians of my time are different from those we see today,” he lamented, highlighting honesty as a foundational value he instilled in his mentees. “For anyone who trained under me, the first lesson is about honesty.”
This ongoing rift illustrates the ongoing tensions between Amaechi and Wike, as both leaders continue to clash over their differing political ideologies and governance approaches in Rivers State.
