See Reasons Church of Nigeria Urges Creation of New Constitution

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Reverend (Dr.) Henry Ndukuba, has called for the Nigerian government to create a new, people-centric constitution. He made this appeal during the opening of the Church’s Standing Committee meeting at St. Andrew’s Basilica Anglican Church in Trans Ekulu, Enugu State.
Archbishop Ndukuba emphasized that Nigeria faces numerous pressing issues, many of which have been highlighted by recent protests, such as the ‘Endbadgovernance’ movement. He acknowledged the National Assembly’s efforts to amend the existing military-era constitution but stressed the need for a completely new constitution crafted by a Sovereign Assembly representing the people of Nigeria. This new framework should address concerns raised during past Sovereign National Conferences and respond to calls for restructuring, asserting that failing to act would only prolong the nation’s challenges.
He urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to establish a robust foundation for democratic governance, proposing that a civilian constitution be developed to tackle the root causes of citizens’ grievances.
The primate pointed out that the ‘Endbadgovernance’ protests occurred without identifiable leadership or specific demands, highlighting a widespread frustration with the government’s unfulfilled promises, particularly regarding the rising cost of living that has burdened many households.
Ndukuba further noted that the calls for understanding and sacrifice from those in power contrast sharply with their opulent lifestyles amid widespread hardship. He urged government officials to listen to the voices of the citizens and recognize that no government can legislate away the hunger and discontent that drives people to protest.
