Labour Party Crisis: Lagos Party Chairman, Ekong Celebrates Court Ruling Validating Abure’s Leadership

Pastor Dayo Ekong, chairman of the Labour Party in Lagos State, has hailed a recent Federal High Court ruling affirming the legitimacy of Julius Abure’s National Working Committee (NWC) as a significant win for democracy and the rule of law.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, Ekong addressed the ongoing power struggle within the party, particularly between Abure’s faction and a rival faction led by 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti. On October 8, 2024, Justice Emeka Nwite declared the Labour Party’s national convention, held in Nnewi in March 2024, as valid, solidifying the Abure-led executive’s authority.

Ekong characterized the ruling as a pivotal victory for justice in Nigeria, noting that it also instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and support Abure’s NWC. “This court decision reaffirms our leadership’s legitimacy and strengthens our commitment to the principles upon which the Labour Party was founded,” he stated.

However, Ekong cautioned against complacency, urging party members to unite and focus on the upcoming local government elections in Lagos. “Now is the time to set aside our differences and work collectively towards these elections. We owe it to ourselves and our supporters to present a unified Labour Party capable of driving meaningful change in our communities,” he emphasized.

He reminded party leaders and members that selflessness and service should guide their actions. “We must reject misleading promises and resist attempts by a few to create division among us,” he urged, calling for integrity and genuine dedication to the party’s cause.

Ekong stressed the importance of responsible communication, urging members to avoid unfounded accusations and divisive language. “Our words have power; they can either unite us or create rifts. Let’s ensure our dialogue promotes unity and progress within the party,” he said.

As the council elections approach, he called on all members to prioritize the Labour Party’s interests over personal ambitions. “Now is the time to prove that the Labour Party is the true voice of the people. Together, we can face any challenges and restore hope to Lagos State and Nigeria.”

In closing, Ekong praised the judiciary for upholding justice and encouraged all members to unite under the party’s banner as they prepare for the upcoming elections, reaffirming the Labour Party’s commitment to being a beacon of hope for Nigerians.
