House of Reps Member Arrested for Assaulting Bolt Driver in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has taken Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, a representative for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, into custody following allegations of assault against a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya.
According to a statement from FCT Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, the incident transpired when Abuwatseya arrived at Ikwechegh’s residence to deliver a package, leading to a dispute regarding the delivery process.
Reports indicate that during this confrontation, Ikwechegh allegedly slapped the driver and made disparaging remarks about the Inspector General of Police.
The police expressed their concern over Ikwechegh’s behavior, noting that he is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station. “Initial investigations suggest that the altercation occurred when Mr. Abuwatseya was making a delivery to Hon. Ikwechegh, which escalated into a physical confrontation,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the police highlighted Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for law enforcement authority. After the alleged assault, he reportedly dismissed the situation, saying, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.”
The incident occurred on Sunday at Ikwechegh’s home in Abuja. Following the altercation, the Bolt driver claimed that the lawmaker belittled him, saying, “You are just a Bolt driver, a poor man with pride.”
Though the driver was initially taken to the Maitama Police Station and denied phone calls, he has since been released, but his vehicle remains impounded by the police.
