A viral video surfaced showing Ikwechegh in a physical altercation with Abuwatseya, during which he reportedly threatened the driver and claimed that even the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, could not intervene.

This incident has sparked significant outrage across Nigeria, with many demanding justice for Abuwatseya.

In a statement released on Monday evening, Rotimi Akin Rotimi Jr., the spokesperson for the House, confirmed that an investigation is currently underway.

“The House of Representatives is closely monitoring reports related to the alleged incident involving Rep. Alex Ikwechegh (APGA, Abia). These reports have received considerable media attention and detail accusations of a physical confrontation with e-hailing driver Stephen Abuwatseya, as well as the use of threatening language.”

The statement emphasized that the 10th Assembly takes such allegations seriously. “As elected officials, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability, both in our public and private actions. Any behavior that fails to meet these standards is concerning and will be addressed appropriately.”

The House noted that the case is currently with the Nigeria Police and urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed without interference. They also invited further public input on the matter, which can be sent to the provided email addresses.

“We remain committed to upholding the principles of accountability, transparency, and ethical behavior that are the hallmarks of the 10th Assembly. Additional updates will be shared as new information emerges.”
