The Life and Legacy of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja: A Tribute to an Army Chief Who Prioritized His Troops

In this reflection, SOLOMON ODENIYI examines the controversial circumstances surrounding the death of Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, while highlighting the achievements he made during his brief but impactful tenure.

Appointed by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023, alongside other service chiefs, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s tenure was tragically cut short when he passed away on the night of Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in Lagos after battling a long illness. His 505-day service was marked by significant strides in military operations, but his life ended just over a year after assuming office, lasting far longer than his predecessor, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, who tragically died in a plane crash in May 2021.

In the months leading up to Lagbaja’s death, the Nigerian Army was tight-lipped about his health. His prolonged absence from public events sparked speculation, which only intensified as the Army’s silence led to rumors about his condition. Eventually, on October 19, the Army confirmed he had traveled abroad for medical treatment and reassured the public that his absence did not result in any leadership vacuum.

A viral post by Jackson Ude, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, soon followed, claiming that Lagbaja had succumbed to cancer. However, the Army dismissed rumors about his resignation, affirming that there was no truth to such reports.

The “Acting” COAS Controversy

One of the more significant issues that arose during Lagbaja’s absence was the unprecedented confusion surrounding the appointment of an “acting” Chief of Army Staff. While the Army had stated that Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim would act in Lagbaja’s absence, media outlets erroneously reported a formal appointment of an acting COAS, prompting a swift rebuttal from the Defence Headquarters. They clarified that the position of “acting COAS” was not recognized in the Armed Forces Act.

Later, President Tinubu formally appointed Major General Oluyede as the acting Army Chief, leading to concerns over possible infighting within the Army. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, called for unity, urging the leadership to maintain cohesion and discipline during this transitional phase.

A Legacy of Leadership and Commitment to Soldiers

During his short tenure, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was known for his hands-on leadership style, often visiting frontline troops and engaging them directly to boost morale. His presence in conflict zones, such as in Plateau State in July 2023, where he joined soldiers in performing push-ups, was seen as an effort to foster camaraderie and demonstrate solidarity with the troops.

Lagbaja was equally committed to improving the welfare of his soldiers. He introduced key initiatives such as the Welfare Flight Program, which airlifted troops stationed in remote areas back to their homes for leave. Additionally, he increased allowances for soldiers and made strides in clearing long-standing insurance payments. Lagbaja’s leadership also resulted in the creation of an aviation wing for the Nigerian Army, a long-term goal for the service, and he oversaw the approval of 12 attack helicopters to bolster the Army’s operational capabilities.

His tenure also saw the introduction of the “Smart Soldier Initiative,” a program aimed at integrating technology and artificial intelligence to improve military operations and reduce risks for soldiers on the front lines. This initiative, along with his efforts to combat terrorism and oil theft, left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s security forces.

Military Career and Personal Background

Born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s military journey began at the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he was commissioned in 1992. His career took him through various leadership roles, including serving as the General Officer Commanding the 82nd and 1st Divisions, before his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff. He also earned advanced degrees in Strategic Studies, including a Master’s from the U.S. Army War College.

The Road Ahead for the Nigerian Army

With Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s passing, Lt. Gen. Oluyede is expected to be formally appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff. This transition may prompt further restructuring within the Army, though the focus will likely be on maintaining the unity and discipline that Lagbaja emphasized during his tenure.

Though his time as Chief of Army Staff was brief, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s leadership will be remembered for his dedication to the welfare of his troops, his focus on operational excellence, and his commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s military. His legacy will undoubtedly influence the direction of the Army for years to come.
