Kanu Rejects IPOB’s Bans, Reveals Next Steps to Take
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected the Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the proscription of IPOB as a terrorist group, announcing plans to take the case to the Supreme Court.
In a statement, Kanu’s legal team expressed strong disagreement with the ruling, describing it as a decision that would be remembered for its injustice. They vowed to challenge the ruling within the bounds of both domestic and international law.
The IPOB leadership questioned the national security threats cited in 2017 as justification for the group’s proscription, accusing the judgment of unfairly targeting the Igbo people. They also pointed out that the Nigerian Constitution sets out a specific procedure that must be followed before any constitutional rights can be suspended on national security grounds—a process they claim was ignored in this case.
