Mali’s Military Government Abolishes Political Parties

Mali’s ruling military regime has officially disbanded all political parties, according to an announcement broadcast on state television on Tuesday. The decision was confirmed by the country’s leader, Assimi Goita.
This action follows a national forum held last month, where political stakeholders advised the dissolution of existing parties and proposed that Goita continue as president for a five-year term.
The proposal sparked public outcry, prompting protests in the capital, Bamako, on May 3 and 4. Demonstrators carried signs advocating for the return of multi-party democracy and voiced their dissent with chants such as “Down with dictatorship, long live democracy.”
In anticipation of further unrest, with another protest scheduled for May 9, authorities issued a nationwide suspension of political activities. As a result, opposition groups were compelled to call off the planned demonstration.
