Peter Obi: I’m Not Desperate for Presidency, I Just Want Nigeria to Succeed

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has reiterated that his ambition is not driven by a desire for power, but by a deep commitment to seeing Nigeria function better for its people. This statement was reported by ABN TV.

Speaking during a special Anniversary Sabbath service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Umuahia, Abia State, held to mark the second year of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, Obi shared his views on leadership and governance.

The former governor of Anambra State pointed out the complexities involved in governing Nigeria, especially for leaders who are intent on doing what is right. He appealed to the people of Abia to offer prayers for Governor Otti and his team, emphasizing that good leadership requires divine support.

“Leading Nigeria or any of its states is never easy—especially when you’re committed to doing the right thing,” Obi said. “It’s not the presidency I’m desperate for; I’m desperate for a working Nigeria.”

Obi urged citizens to continuously pray for those in power and called on public officials to be responsible stewards of public funds, ensuring they are used for the benefit of all.

He praised Governor Otti’s efforts in the past two years, describing the administration’s impact as significant. Obi dismissed the notion that change in governance requires extended time in office.

“People often think they need eight or more years to bring about change, but I’ve always maintained that even a single day can be transformational. What is happening in Abia should serve as an example for the rest of the country,” he said.

In response, Governor Otti credited the achievements of his administration to divine support and thanked Peter Obi for his unwavering encouragement. He also extended gratitude to the Abia State legislature, judiciary, and the church for their ongoing prayers and backing.
