FG Dismisses 15 Correctional Officers in Major Misconduct Crackdown
The Federal Government has dismissed 15 officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following findings of gross misconduct, in what authorities describe as part of a renewed drive to uphold discipline, integrity, and accountability within the service.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the NCoS spokesperson revealed that the dismissals came after a series of internal investigations into breaches of professional ethics, ranging from abuse of office to aiding activities that compromise security within correctional facilities.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service will not tolerate any form of misconduct capable of tarnishing the image of the service or undermining its core mandate,” the statement read. “These officers were found guilty after due process, including disciplinary panels and necessary approvals from the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board.”
While the identities of the dismissed officers were not disclosed, sources within the service hinted that the offenses included smuggling contraband into facilities, engaging in corrupt practices, and other acts deemed detrimental to the safety and order of custodial centres.
The Controller-General of the NCoS reiterated the government’s commitment to reforming the nation’s correctional system, stressing that discipline among staff is crucial to ensuring security and rehabilitation objectives are met.
“This action sends a clear message — the era of impunity is over. Officers must uphold the highest standards of conduct,” he said.
The Federal Government’s move comes amid increasing scrutiny of Nigeria’s correctional facilities, which have faced challenges including overcrowding, jailbreaks, and allegations of corruption. Stakeholders hope the disciplinary measures will help restore public confidence in the service and deter others from engaging in misc
onduct.
