AMAC Chairman Orders Immediate Halt to Radio and TV Levies on Residential Properties

AMAC Chairman Orders Immediate Halt to Radio and TV Levies on Residential Properties

The Executive Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has ordered the immediate suspension of radio and television license taxes previously imposed on residential properties within the council area.

This move comes in direct response to growing public concern and widespread opposition from residents who criticized the tax as unfair and poorly communicated.

The announcement was made via an official statement issued by Kingsley Madaki, the Chairman’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs. In the statement, Hon. Maikalangu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare of AMAC residents and ensuring that government policies are in line with the needs and expectations of the community.

He explained that while the radio and television tax was initially introduced to support developmental efforts and enhance public infrastructure, the rollout lacked sufficient consultation and public awareness, which led to misunderstanding and resistance.

In light of the feedback, the Chairman has directed the AMAC Revenue Department to halt the collection of these taxes from residential homes and to retract any notices that may have already been issued. He also called for a thorough review of the tax framework to ensure it is implemented with greater transparency and fairness.

Going forward, the radio and TV tax will only apply to commercial entities—such as hotels, offices, restaurants, and business establishments—where such levies are more justifiable and will not place undue financial strain on individual households.

Hon. Maikalangu emphasized his government’s commitment to creating a balanced environment where both residents and businesses can thrive. He encouraged community members to remain engaged in civic matters and to continue offering constructive input on policies that impact their lives.

To ensure clear communication, AMAC will release updated guidelines on the revised tax policy through its official website, social media platforms, and upcoming town hall meetings.

In closing, the Chairman expressed his gratitude to residents for their active participation and reassured them of his administration’s focus on equitable governance, accountability, and sustainable development.
