Man Set Free After Six Years in Prison for a Crime He Says He Never Committed

Ikechukwu Ejibo has regained his freedom after spending more than six years behind bars for an offence he consistently denied. He was arrested in 2019 during a police raid and kept in custody without trial at the Onitsha Correctional Centre over a theft allegation, highlighting the deep problems of prolonged detention and delayed justice in Nigeria.
Ejibo was finally released on December 3, 2025, after six years and three months in prison. His case has drawn attention to the reality of overcrowded prisons and the thousands of detainees across the country still waiting for their day in court.
Photos of Ejibo outside the prison, surrounded by supporters, quickly went viral online. His serious facial expression sparked mixed reactions, from sympathy to light-hearted jokes, with memes spreading widely and pushing the story past one million views.
The blend of concern and humour in the reactions reflects Nigeria’s online culture, where serious issues often mix with banter. The post’s creator also used the moment to boost engagement, sharing a follow-back message that helped drive even more attention to the story.
