Osita Obi Urges Power Minister to Step Aside Over Worsening Electricity Crisis

Human rights advocate and Convener of the Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi, has demanded the resignation of the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, citing persistent electricity failures across the country, including during the recent Christmas celebrations.

In a statement released on Friday, Obi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the widespread power outages that plagued many parts of Nigeria during a period usually marked by heightened electricity use, social gatherings, and increased commercial activity. He described the situation as a clear sign of poor leadership and weak capacity within the nation’s power sector.

Obi lamented that rather than enjoying improved electricity supply during the festive season, Nigerians were left in darkness, a development he said reflects inadequate planning and lack of foresight by the Ministry of Power. According to him, the situation has deepened the struggles of families and small-scale businesses already battling economic hardship.

The activist argued that responsible leadership requires accountability without external pressure. He maintained that the Minister should voluntarily step down and offer a sincere apology to Nigerians for failing to meet public expectations, especially in such a critical sector.

Questioning Adelabu’s competence, Obi described his appointment as ill-suited for the demands of the power sector. He stressed that managing electricity supply requires strong vision, technical understanding, and decisive leadership, qualities he believes are currently lacking.

He further emphasized that reliable electricity is vital to economic growth, national progress, and improved living standards, warning that continued power failures erode public trust in government and fuel widespread frustration.

“In any serious and responsible society, a minister in this position would not wait to be asked before resigning. The power sector needs visionary leadership, and what we are seeing now is a clear mismatch,” Obi stated.
