2027 Is My Target, Not a Vice Presidency” — Peter Obi Declares

“2027 Is My Target, Not a Vice Presidency” — Peter Obi Declares

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has firmly dismissed speculation about accepting a vice-presidential role ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that his political ambition is squarely focused on the presidency.

Speaking during a recent public engagement, Obi made it clear that he is not interested in playing a secondary role or using a vice-presidential position as a training ground for governance. According to him, his years in public service, private-sector experience, and participation in national politics have sufficiently prepared him for the highest office in the land.

“I am contesting for the presidency in 2027. I am not learning governance to become a vice president,” Obi stated, drawing applause from supporters and reigniting debate within Nigeria’s political space.

His remarks come amid growing speculation and behind-the-scenes negotiations within opposition circles, where discussions about alliances, mergers, and possible running mates have already begun—despite the election still being years away. Obi’s statement appears aimed at shutting down narratives that portray him as open to a supporting role in any political arrangement.

Since the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi has remained a prominent voice in national discourse, frequently commenting on issues of economic management, public accountability, insecurity, and leadership ethics. He has continued to engage with young Nigerians, civil society groups, and professionals, reinforcing the reform-driven message that powered his previous campaign.

Political analysts see Obi’s declaration as a strategic move to assert leadership within the opposition and maintain the loyalty of his support base, many of whom view him as a symbol of political change rather than compromise. By ruling out a vice-presidential slot early, Obi signals consistency and determination—qualities his supporters believe set him apart from traditional power brokers.

However, critics argue that Nigeria’s complex political landscape often requires coalition-building and flexibility, suggesting that outright rejection of compromise could pose challenges ahead. Supporters counter that clear ambition and firm principles are necessary to break the cycle of transactional politics.

As conversations about 2027 gradually gain momentum, Peter Obi’s stance adds clarity to his political direction. Whether his uncompromising position will strengthen his chances or complicate opposition unity remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Obi has drawn a clear line: for him, the goal is the presidency—nothing less.
