The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has announced that the Nigerian Navy will assume responsibility for securing the Lake Chad waterways as part of efforts to restrict the operations and movement of terrorist groups in the region.

The development has been widely welcomed, as the Lake Chad Basin has long posed serious security challenges due to its vast, difficult terrain and its location near fragile and poorly regulated border areas. These factors have historically limited the effectiveness of coordinated military operations in the zone.
Security analysts have repeatedly identified the Lake Chad corridor as a major route for the illegal flow of small arms and light weapons into Nigeria, fueling insurgency and criminal activities. The absence of sustained naval patrols has allowed armed groups to exploit the waterways for logistics, escape, and cross-border movement.
With the Nigerian Navy now taking an active role in monitoring and controlling the waterways, authorities believe terrorist networks will face increased pressure and reduced operational freedom. A strengthened naval presence on Lake Chad is seen as a critical step toward disrupting supply routes and weakening insurgent groups operating in the region.
