President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed strong optimism that the proposed amendment to Nigeria’s Electoral Act will strengthen democracy, safeguard the sanctity of the ballot, and eliminate avenues for electoral manipulation.

Speaking during plenary at the Nigerian Senate, Akpabio said the reform process reflects the National Assembly’s resolve to restore public trust in elections and ensure that the will of the people prevails in every contest. According to him, credible elections remain the bedrock of any democratic system, and Nigeria must continue to refine its electoral laws to meet global standards.

Closing the Gaps

Akpabio noted that while the current Electoral Act introduced significant improvements, including technological innovations, experience from recent elections revealed areas that require fine-tuning. The amendment, he explained, aims to address procedural ambiguities, strengthen oversight mechanisms, and impose stricter penalties for electoral offences.

He emphasized that the reforms would enhance transparency in vote transmission, collation, and result declaration. “Every vote must count, and every voter must be assured that their mandate cannot be altered or manipulated,” he stated.

Boosting Confidence in INEC

The Senate President also reaffirmed legislative support for the Independent National Electoral Commission, stressing that the electoral umpire needs a clear legal framework and operational independence to function effectively. By refining the Act, lawmakers intend to empower the commission with stronger tools to manage elections efficiently and resist undue interference.

Observers believe the amendment could further clarify issues surrounding electronic transmission of results and the deployment of technology in polling processes—areas that have generated legal and political debates in recent years.

Tougher Sanctions for Offenders

Another key component of the proposed changes is the imposition of harsher penalties for vote-buying, ballot snatching, falsification of results, and other electoral malpractices. Akpabio maintained that deterrence is essential to curb misconduct and discourage those who undermine democratic principles.

He stressed that credible elections are not just about casting ballots but about ensuring fairness at every stage—from party primaries to final result announcements.

Strengthening Democratic Institutions

Akpabio further described the amendment as part of a broader commitment to institutional reforms aimed at consolidating democracy in Nigeria. He called on political stakeholders, civil society groups, and citizens to actively participate in the legislative review process to ensure that the final document reflects national aspirations.

“As lawmakers, we are duty-bound to enact laws that protect the people’s mandate. When citizens believe in the electoral system, governance becomes more stable and inclusive,” he said.
