Kano Establishes Onion Storage Facility to Cut Post-Harvest Losses

The Kano State Government has developed a modern onion storage facility aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring the crop remains available to consumers even outside its peak production season.
The initiative is designed to address the long-standing challenge faced by onion farmers who often suffer heavy losses due to inadequate storage infrastructure after harvest. By providing a controlled environment for preserving onions, the facility is expected to significantly extend the shelf life of the produce.
Officials say the project will help stabilise market supply throughout the year, particularly during the off-season when scarcity often leads to sharp price increases. The storage system is also expected to improve farmers’ earnings by enabling them to keep their produce longer and sell when market conditions are more favourable.
Agricultural stakeholders in the state believe the development will strengthen the local value chain by improving food preservation, reducing waste, and enhancing the availability of onions in local markets.
Beyond supporting farmers, the facility is also expected to contribute to food security and boost the agricultural economy of Kano State by ensuring that one of the region’s major crops remains accessible to consumers year-round.
