Oluremi Tinubu Urges Nigerians to Reject ‘Entitlement Mindset’ , Calls for Responsibility and Integrity

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to abandon what she described as an “entitlement mindset,” urging citizens to embrace responsibility, integrity and a stronger commitment to service in both public and private life.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi. According to the statement, the First Lady made the remarks while hosting an interfaith breaking of fast gathering that brought together women from various sectors across the country. The event coincided with both the Muslim Ramadan fast and the Christian Lenten season.
Speaking at the gathering, Mrs. Tinubu noted that the overlap of the two religious observances offers a powerful message about unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians. She described the moment as symbolic, saying it reflects a divine opportunity for people of different backgrounds to come together in harmony.
She observed that despite efforts in some quarters to inflame religious tensions, Nigerians have historically maintained a tradition of living together peacefully regardless of faith. According to her, interfaith relationships and shared communities across the country demonstrate that religious diversity has long been part of Nigeria’s social fabric.
Drawing from personal experience, the First Lady referenced her nearly four decades of marriage to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that mutual respect and understanding have played a key role in sustaining their relationship. She noted that tolerance and maturity remain essential ingredients for peaceful coexistence in families and society at large.
Mrs. Tinubu also urged Nigerians to move away from expectations of entitlement and instead focus on contributing meaningfully to national development. She emphasized that citizens must adopt a mindset that prioritizes service, responsibility and ethical conduct.
Addressing women at the event, she encouraged those whose spouses hold public offices, as well as women in leadership positions, to recognize their influence in promoting accountability and responsible governance. According to her, their roles extend beyond personal or family interests to shaping values that support national progress.
She further highlighted the importance of mentoring younger generations, stressing that the future of the country depends largely on the guidance and moral values passed on to the youth.
In a lecture delivered during the event, Professor Ganiyat Adejoke Adesina-Uthman of the National Open University of Nigeria spoke on the topic, “Serving with Excellence, Compassion and Integrity in Public Life.” She warned that declining public trust in leadership has become a growing concern and emphasized that integrity remains a fundamental requirement for anyone entrusted with public responsibility.
