A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of three people, including a toddler, along the busy Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, leaving commuters and residents in shock.

The fatal crash reportedly occurred when a heavy-duty truck lost control and rammed into pedestrians by the roadside. Witnesses said the victims were standing near a commercial bus stop when the truck veered off the road and struck them.

According to eyewitness accounts, the impact of the collision was devastating, killing the toddler and two adults instantly. Bystanders rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue the victims, but it was too late for the three who had already succumbed to their injuries.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived shortly after the incident to secure the area and manage traffic along the highway, which was temporarily disrupted by the accident. The bodies of the victims were later evacuated and taken to a nearby morgue.

Preliminary reports suggest that excessive speed and possible brake failure may have contributed to the crash, although authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause.

A spokesperson for the FRSC urged motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on journeys. The official also advised road users to remain vigilant and avoid standing too close to highways where fast-moving vehicles pose serious risks.

The Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway is one of the busiest roads linking Lagos and Abeokuta, and it has witnessed several road accidents over the years due to high traffic volume and reckless driving.

Residents of the area have called on authorities to introduce stronger safety measures, including stricter enforcement of speed limits and improved traffic control, to prevent further loss of lives on the highway.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety awareness across Nigeria, as families mourn the sudden and heartbreaking loss of their loved ones.
