Suspected Thugs Disrupt PDP Congresses in Oyo as Rival Party Factions Clash

Tension erupted in parts of Oyo State on Saturday after suspected political thugs reportedly disrupted local government congresses organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The incidents occurred during party congresses held across several local government areas in the state. The gatherings were reportedly attacked while proceedings were ongoing, forcing members to disperse and leaving a number of participants injured.
Political sources say the PDP in Oyo State is currently divided into two main factions—one loyal to Wike and another aligned with the state governor, Seyi Makinde.
The disrupted congresses were organised by the group backing Wike as part of its internal party activities scheduled for the day.
According to reports from party officials present at the events, a group of hoodlums believed to be political thugs stormed several venues where the congresses were taking place. In the chaos that followed, about ten individuals were said to have been assaulted, while a number of vehicles parked around the venues were vandalised.
The chairman of the faction loyal to Wike, Abdulrahman Akinoso, confirmed the attacks during a telephone interview, stating that multiple locations across the state were affected.
He said incidents were recorded in Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Ibarapa Central, and Akinyele local government areas.
According to Akinoso, several vehicles were damaged during the attack in Ibadan North, particularly around the Bodija area, where party members had gathered for the congress.
He added that at least ten people sustained injuries across the affected locations as a result of the disruptions.
The incidents have further highlighted the deepening divisions within the PDP structure in Oyo State, with rival factions continuing to organise separate activities and contest control of party structures.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official confirmation from security agencies regarding arrests connected to the attacks.
