Seven AIGs Elevated to DIG Rank as Police Service Commission Strengthens Leadership

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has promoted seven Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) of Police to the rank of Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs), a move aimed at reinforcing the leadership framework of the Nigeria Police Force.
The promotions followed a merit-based process that considered seniority, service records, and performance in both written examinations and oral interviews conducted at the PSC’s headquarters in Abuja.
The newly elevated officers are:
- Zachariah Fera Achinyan (formerly AIG, Zone 4, Makurdi)
- Zango Ibrahim Baba (formerly AIG, Department of Logistics and Supply)
- Isyaku Mohammed (formerly AIG, Armament, Force Headquarters, Abuja)
- Margaret Agebe Ochalla (formerly AIG, FCID Annex, Lagos)
- Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman (formerly AIG, Police Accounts and Budget, Force Headquarters, Abuja)
- Kenechukwu Onwuemelie (formerly AIG, Zone 15, Maiduguri)
- Umar Shehu Nadada (formerly AIG, Zone 14, Katsina)
The commission said the promotions were necessary to fill the vacancies created by the recent retirement of eight DIGs who previously held key positions within the force. The announcement follows the earlier elevation of DIG Fayoade Adegoke to the substantive rank of Deputy Inspector-General.
Speaking on the occasion, PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.) congratulated the officers and urged them to justify the confidence placed in them. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing national security and maintaining effective collaboration with the commission to support the development and operational efficiency of the police force.
Members of the PSC Board who served as examiners during the promotion exercise included Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (retd.), Dr Taiwo Lakanu (retd. DIG and Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Matters), and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
The newly promoted DIGs are now set to join the Force Management Team, taking on strategic responsibilities to enhance law enforcement and leadership across the country.
