Peter Obi Moves to Challenge 2026 Electoral Law, Raises Alarm Over 2027 Polls

Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi has announced plans to challenge aspects of the newly enacted 2026 Electoral Act in court, expressing concerns that certain provisions in the legislation could affect the conduct and credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Obi made the remarks in Awka during the launch of a membership mobilisation, registration and revalidation exercise organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Anambra State.

Addressing party supporters, the former presidential candidate stated that he believes some elements of the new electoral framework may have implications for the fairness of future elections. According to him, legal steps would be taken to seek judicial clarification on the contested provisions.

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality and concentrate on its constitutional mandate of conducting credible elections without becoming involved in internal party matters.

“A referee should not be the one determining the rules or deciding how teams line up,” Obi said, stressing that electoral authorities must remain impartial.

During the event, party leaders encouraged residents and supporters across Anambra State to register with the ADC at their respective wards as part of efforts to expand the party’s grassroots presence ahead of future elections.

Chairman of the occasion, Ndii Obi, said the party was committed to providing a political platform that allows members to actively participate in decision-making and party activities.

Also speaking, the chairman of the state registration committee, Ben Nwosu, described the mobilisation exercise as a strategic step toward strengthening the party’s structure across the state. He disclosed that the first batch of membership cards would be distributed across the state’s 21 local government areas.

The party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, explained that the registration process would be conducted both online and manually. Prospective members, he said, are expected to complete the online registration before collecting their membership cards at designated centres.

Idigo further revealed that the ADC intends to adopt a direct primary system for selecting its candidates in future elections.

The ADC’s candidate in the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election, John Nwosu, described the mobilisation exercise as an important step toward consolidating the party’s presence in the state.

Also present at the gathering was Victor Umeh, the senator representing Anambra Central, who described the event as significant and reiterated his support for Obi’s political aspirations.
