Fubara Honours Mothers, Says Their Love and Sacrifice Sustain Society

Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, has extended warm greetings to mothers across the state in celebration of Mothering Sunday, commending their vital role in nurturing families and strengthening communities.

In a goodwill message released on Sunday, the governor described mothers as the backbone of society, acknowledging their dedication, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to raising responsible children and future leaders.

The message was conveyed in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, and made available to journalists.

Fubara praised the resilience and strength demonstrated by women in their roles within the family and society, stressing that their influence extends beyond the home into the broader development of communities.

“On behalf of the government and people of Rivers State, I warmly greet all mothers on the occasion of Mothering Sunday,” the governor said.

He further celebrated the sacrifices mothers make daily, describing their love and care as foundational to the growth and stability of society.

“We celebrate the selfless love, care, and sacrifices of mothers across our great state. Your tireless efforts in shaping families and communities are truly the backbone of our society,” he added.

Mothering Sunday is widely observed in Nigeria as both a religious and social occasion, particularly within churches linked to the Anglican Communion. Reports by Nigerian media outlets such as Punch Newspapers and Vanguard Newspapers note that the celebration takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when churches honour mothers and maternal figures through special services and recognition ceremonies.

The day is also marked by family gatherings, the sharing of gifts, and other gestures of appreciation aimed at recognising the important role mothers play in family life and the development of society.
