Cubana Chief Priest Sparks Controversy Over Remarks on Peter Obi and Tinubu’s “City Boy” Movement

Nigerian businessman and celebrity barman Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, has come under criticism after making controversial remarks about Peter Obi while expressing support for Bola Ahmed Tinubuand the pro-Tinubu City Boy Movement.
The socialite’s comments surfaced during a public event in Imo State, where he appeared on stage alongside Seyi Tinubuduring activities linked to the movement.
Speaking to the crowd, Cubana Chief Priest revealed that he did not support Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election because he initially wanted to support an Igbo candidate. However, he described that decision as a mistake.
“I wanted to be an Igbo boy during the election, and that was the biggest mistake of my life,” he said in a video that has circulated widely online.
The celebrity barman went further to criticise his previous political stance, saying he had reconsidered his position and now supports Tinubu. He used a food analogy to explain his change of mind, describing Obi as his “first food,” but adding that Tinubu has now become his “second food” and the “real food.”
His remarks have triggered widespread reactions on social media, particularly among supporters of Obi, many of whom criticised the statement as disrespectful.
According to reports by Nigerian media outlets including The Punch and Daily Trust, the comments have sparked debate about celebrity involvement in Nigerian politics and the influence of public figures on political discourse.
Cubana Chief Priest explained that his decision to align with the City Boy Movement was motivated by what he described as a desire for greater inclusion and benefits from government policies.
He said he was seeking a “fair share” for himself and his community and therefore chose to support Tinubu and the movement promoting the president’s political agenda.
Political analysts note that the development reflects the growing intersection between entertainment personalities and politics in Nigeria, where influential figures increasingly use public platforms to express political positions.
Despite the backlash, Cubana Chief Priest has not publicly retracted the remarks, which continue to generate debate across social media platforms and within Nigeria’s political circles.
