El-Rufai Accuses ICPC of Political Intimidation, Files Court Action

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) attempted to pressure him into abandoning politics as a condition for regaining his freedom during a period of detention.
The claims are contained in a detailed criminal complaint filed before a court, in which El-Rufai accused the ICPC leadership, including its chairman, Musa Adamu Aliyu, and other unnamed officials of misconduct and abuse of office.
According to the filing, the former governor alleged that while in custody, operatives of the anti-corruption agency informed him that his release could only be secured if he agreed to step away from political engagements. He argued that such a condition amounts to a violation of his constitutional rights and an attempt to unlawfully restrict his participation in Nigeria’s political space.
In the court documents, El-Rufai further claimed that the pressure was persistent, with officials allegedly warning that continued involvement in politics could prolong his detention. His legal team maintained that the actions of the commission’s officers form part of a broader attempt to coerce him into compliance.
The complaint reportedly cites provisions of the Penal Code relating to wrongful confinement with intent to compel, forming a key part of the legal arguments presented before the court.
According to The Punch, the suit seeks judicial scrutiny of the conduct of the ICPC officials, with El-Rufai asking the court to determine whether the alleged actions constitute an abuse of power.
Legal analysts say the case could test the limits of law enforcement authority in relation to political rights and personal freedoms in Nigeria. Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that the ICPC has yet to issue an official response to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
The development adds a new dimension to ongoing debates around governance, accountability, and the intersection of law enforcement with political participation in the country.
