Sultan Declares Friday Eid as Security Agencies Deploy Nationwide for Peaceful Sallah

The Sultanate Council in Sokoto has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr across Nigeria, following the completion of the 30-day Ramadan fast.
The announcement, conveyed through a statement by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu, confirmed that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal 1447AH was not sighted on Wednesday. As reported by The Punch, this automatically extended Ramadan to 30 days in line with Islamic tradition, with Eid scheduled for the following day.
The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, subsequently approved the declaration, urging Muslims nationwide to celebrate peacefully and sustain the spiritual discipline observed during Ramadan.
According to The Nation Newspaper, the Sultan also called for continued prayers for national unity, peace, and development, stressing the importance of maintaining the values of sacrifice and devotion beyond the fasting period.
As preparations intensify for the Sallah celebration, security agencies across the country have activated extensive operational plans to ensure safety of lives and property.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the deployment of over 53,000 personnel across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Daily Times Nigeria reports that the operatives include intelligence units and tactical squads positioned at strategic locations such as Eid prayer grounds, shopping centres, motor parks, markets, and other public spaces.
Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Abubakar Audi, directed commanders at all levels to heighten surveillance and protect critical national infrastructure during the festive period. He also emphasised the need for collaboration with other security agencies to promptly respond to any threats.
Similarly, the Nigeria Police Force has rolled out large-scale deployments nationwide. From northern states like Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, and Kebbi to southern states including Ogun, Edo, and Osun, commissioners of police have announced coordinated strategies involving patrols, intelligence-led operations, and increased visibility policing.
In Niger and Edo states alone, authorities confirmed the deployment of about 5,000 officers each to cover major public areas. According to The Guardian Nigeria, special units such as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams, counter-terrorism squads, and anti-crime units have been stationed at key locations to prevent any security breaches.
Police authorities have also issued strict warnings against activities that could disrupt public peace. In several states, restrictions have been placed on the use of fireworks, dangerous weapons, and reckless driving, particularly during Durbar festivities.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while parents and guardians were urged to monitor their children to prevent them from being exploited by criminal elements.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government had earlier declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays to mark the end of Ramadan, allowing Muslims across the country to fully participate in the Eid celebrations.
Across social media, the announcement of the Eid date has been met with widespread excitement, as Nigerians prepare for prayers, family gatherings, and festivities, even as authorities continue to stress the importance of safety.
With security tightened nationwide and millions set to observe the festival, officials say all measures are in place to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
