PDP Crisis Escalates: Governors’ Bloc Slams Wike Convention, Heads to Supreme Court Showdown

PDP Crisis Escalates: Governors’ Bloc Slams Wike Convention, Heads to Supreme Court Showdown

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing renewed turbulence as the faction aligned with serving governors has rejected the recent Abuja convention backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, describing it as illegitimate and legally questionable.

The camp, led by factional National Chairman Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has now escalated the dispute to the Supreme Court, seeking a decisive interpretation of the party’s leadership structure and internal processes.

In a statement released on Monday by its spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, the group expressed concern over what it called a series of “provocative developments” within the party. According to The Guardian Nigeria, the statement framed the Abuja gathering as a violation of ongoing judicial proceedings and warned of broader implications for internal democracy.

The Turaki-led bloc argued that the convention organised by the Wike-aligned faction was conducted in disregard of legal processes already before the courts. It insisted that the event, which produced a new National Working Committee (NWC), lacked legitimacy and should not be recognised.

Describing the development in strong terms, the faction alleged that those behind the convention acted in defiance of existing court engagements, a position similarly echoed in reports by Channels Television, which noted that the leadership crisis has increasingly taken a legal dimension.

The governors’ camp confirmed it had formally filed an appeal at the apex court, alongside other legal applications, to challenge both the convention and subsequent actions taken by the rival faction. It added that all relevant parties had been duly served.

Beyond the Supreme Court move, the group also reacted to a separate Federal High Court ruling that reportedly granted the Wike-backed faction access to the party’s national secretariat. The Turaki camp disclosed that it had instructed its legal team to contest the decision, citing concerns over judicial fairness.

Amid the legal back-and-forth, the faction accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of indirectly fueling the PDP’s internal crisis—a claim that has circulated widely across political commentary on platforms like Arise TV and other public affairs programmes.

“This is a defining moment, not just for our party but for Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement suggested, urging party members and supporters to remain calm while awaiting the Supreme Court’s intervention.

The latest development underscores the deepening divisions within the PDP, which has been grappling with internal disputes for nearly three years. While one bloc traces its legitimacy to a previous convention held in Ibadan, the opposing camp insists recent court rulings have invalidated that process and justified a fresh leadership reset.

Despite intermittent reconciliation efforts, including calls from senior figures within the party, the standoff has persisted—leaving the PDP’s structure and future electoral readiness hanging in the balance.

Observers say the Supreme Court’s eventual ruling could determine not only the party’s leadership but also its viability as a united opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
