Firearm Controversy: Oluwole Oke’s Media Aides Blast Osun PDP/Accord, Accuse Pelumi Olajengbesi of Politicising Police Investigation

Firearm Controversy: Oluwole Oke’s Media Aides Blast Osun PDP/Accord, Accuse Pelumi Olajengbesi of Politicising Police Investigation

The Imole Campaign Council spokesperson, Mr. Pelumi Olajengbesi’s latest attempt to politicise a serious security matter is not only unfortunate but deeply irresponsible. Issues involving human life, the unlawful possession of firearms, and threats to public safety must never be reduced to political propaganda or media theatrics.

It is regrettable that, rather than addressing the substance of the ongoing police investigation, Mr. Olajengbesi has chosen to attack state institutions while promoting a narrative that directly contradicts the official position of the Nigeria Police Force.

The facts remain straightforward and deserve honest answers.

The Nigerian Police arrested Mr. Oriyomi Olalekan in possession of a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition. He was publicly paraded by the police, not by Hon. Oluwole Oke. These were official actions taken by a constitutionally empowered law enforcement agency in the course of its investigation.

Instead of advancing conspiracy theories, the Imole Campaign Council should provide clear answers to the following questions:

• Was Oriyomi Olalekan arrested in possession of a loaded Beretta pistol or not?

• Who is the lawful owner of the firearm recovered from him?

• Has anyone credibly disputed the ownership or procurement of that weapon?

• Has the suspect denied the allegations regarding his affiliation with the cult group identified by the police?

• Did Oriyomi make a statement that Hon. Oluwole Oke provided the gun or engaged for security or personal protection?

• If the police fabricated the case, as Mr. Olajengbesi alleges, has any competent court or authorised investigative body reached such a conclusion?

These are the issues that deserve public attention, not emotional rhetoric crafted to generate political sympathy.

It is becoming increasingly evident that Hon. Oluwole Oke has become the principal target of a sustained campaign of political vilification by the PDP/ACCORD alliance, which appears to regard him as the greatest obstacle to its ambition of reclaiming power in Osun State. Rather than engaging in issue-based politics, some political actors have resorted to persistent attacks, misinformation, and calculated attempts to tarnish his reputation.

Despite these orchestrated distractions, Hon. Oluwole Oke remains resolute, focused, and undeterred. No amount of intimidation, blackmail, or propaganda will diminish his commitment to the democratic process or his determination to work tirelessly for the election of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, in the forthcoming election.

Even more disturbing is the growing tendency of the Adeleke administration and some of its supporters to dismiss serious security concerns whenever they become politically inconvenient. Allegations of violence and criminality are routinely branded as “fake” before law enforcement agencies are allowed to complete their investigations.

The Government of Osun State should demonstrate the highest level of commitment to public safety by ensuring that every allegation of political violence is thoroughly investigated. Rather than allowing political rhetoric to overshadow legitimate security concerns, all individuals involved in criminal activities should be brought to justice, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Furthermore, the consistency and credibility of the Imole Campaign Council spokesperson deserve serious scrutiny by all well-meaning citizens of Osun State. Only a few days ago, he commended the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Tunji Disu, for its professionalism, patriotism, and commitment to protecting the lives and property of the people of Osun State. Today, however, he is quick to question the integrity of the very same police force simply because it arrested and paraded suspects in connection with the alleged attempt to assassinate Hon. Oluwole Oke. Such inconsistency raises legitimate questions about whether his position is guided by principle or political convenience.

Hon. Oluwole Oke has consistently demonstrated respect for the rule of law and due process. When the unfortunate killing of Ajayi Aderogba occurred and politically motivated accusations were hastily directed at him, he resisted the temptation to wage a media campaign. Instead, he allowed the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without interference or intimidation.

That same standard of restraint and respect for due process should apply in the present circumstances.

No responsible democracy should encourage attempts to undermine or discredit ongoing criminal investigations simply because the findings may be politically inconvenient. If Mr. Olajengbesi possesses credible evidence capable of disproving the findings of the Nigeria Police, the appropriate forum for presenting such evidence is before the relevant investigative authorities or a court of competent jurisdiction, not through inflammatory statements on social media or in the press.

Security is not, and should never become, a partisan issue. The lives of all Osun citizens are equally valuable, regardless of political affiliation. Those who trivialise credible security concerns for political advantage do a profound disservice to democracy, the rule of law, and the peace and stability of our state.

The people of Osun deserve facts, not fiction; evidence, not propaganda; and justice, not political sensationalism. We therefore urge all parties to allow the security agencies to discharge their constitutional duties professionally, impartially, and without undue political interference.

Only truth, due process, and justice can guarantee lasting peace.
