Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has claimed that attractive assurances from the Presidency and the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are driving the wave of defections into the ruling party.

According to the senator, many lawmakers, top elected officials and influential figures leaving opposition parties are being lured by promises of automatic tickets ahead of future elections. He noted that while defectors often blame internal crises within their former parties or praise the performance of the APC-led government, these explanations do not fully reflect the real motivations behind their decisions.

Abaribe observed that although party switching is not unusual in Nigerian politics, the speed and scale of recent defections—coming less than two years into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure—are alarming. He warned that the trend is thinning the opposition and raising serious questions about the health of democratic competition in the country.
