Abia Police Confirm Attack on Hon. Ginger Onwusibe’s Convoy, One Officer Killed

The Abia State Police Command has confirmed an attack on the convoy of Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the member of the House of Representatives for the Nsiala-Ngwa North/South constituency. The attack resulted in the death of one police officer, while another narrowly escaped, according to reports from ABN TV.
The police stated that the officers, who were traveling in a Toyota Hilux van, had just dropped off the lawmaker in Umuahia when their vehicle was ambushed on their way back.
In a statement released on Monday, the Abia Police spokesperson, ASP Maureen C. Chinaka, confirmed the incident and assured that efforts were underway to apprehend the attackers.
“At approximately 8:30 PM on November 17, 2024, two police officers from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) in Makurdi—Inspector Dunna Jatau and Inspector Bala Mohammed—were ambushed by armed assailants while on official duty in Umuahia. The officers had just dropped off Hon. Onwusibe and were returning when their vehicle was intercepted by gunmen in a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows near the Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala,” Chinaka explained.
The assailants blocked the police vehicle and opened fire. Tragically, Inspector Bala Mohammed was killed at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, while Inspector Dunna Jatau and the driver managed to escape.
Following the attack, a search operation was immediately launched, and police teams were deployed to track down the perpetrators. An investigation is currently underway.
“The Abia State Police Command is determined to bring those responsible for this attack to justice.
